The First 72 Hours when a Resident arrives at a Residential Facility is a critical time. When a Resident arrives, her level of anxiety is extremely high. Fear drives that anxiety. She is attempting to manage unbearable emotional pain. What we, at The WellHouse, have developed is a protocol designed to reduce stimulation while assessing immediate needs. Most Residents meet the criteria for a diagnosis of Complex PTSD, which includes the symptomology of PTSD, but also includes emotional dysregulation, feelings of shame, guilt, or failure, and difficulty in interpersonal relationships. Stabilization is key to begin helping a woman to have a felt experience of safety, both somatically and emotionally. Stabilization includes focusing on attunement in a trauma informed manner. Presentation will cover Complex PTSD, Attunement and Attachment Theory. It will also cover two important concepts: holding and containing. The last part of the presentation will give concrete ways to implement these concepts.
