About this Speaker

Mary Margaret Bawden received a BA in modern dance from UCRiverside, a MA from Hope International University in Fullerton CA, and a California secondary teaching credential. She released a book in 2016 on faith-based dance titled “Dance is Prayer in Motion: Soul to Sole Choreography for Christian Dance Ministry” and developed a dance ministry at her church for over 20 years. Recently, Mary has noticed that the culture around children’s dance has moved towards an unhealthy, harmful trend – the sexualization of children under 12 in adult costumes, choreography and music. That focus translates into a desire to advocate for healthy, age-appropriate, educational materials to protect children in the current culture. Mary Founded DA:NCE (dance awareness: no child exploited) in 2016, and has spoken at NDEO(National Dance Educator’s Organization), CDEA (California dance educator’s organization), CAHPERD (California Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance) and the CESE Summits. At NRB (National Religious Broadcaster’s Conference), she has been interviewed by and written for a wide range of TV, podcast, and radio hosts. One article Mary wrote received over 250,000 hits in 2019. In 2020, DA:NCE released a new group of online resources showing how hypersexualized children’s dance grooms children corporately for unhealthy outcomes.
