Following the disappearance of our daughter in 2016, our personal story hit social media and went viral. Within the first hour, the public story took the theme of all-American girl falling victim to human trafficking in her suburban community. As a result, our doorbell, phones and emails blew up with offers of support by nearly 50 non-profits across the U.S. My husband and I were ill-equipped to understand the needs of our daughter and how to effectively navigate the fast-paced decisions we were forced to make on a minute-by-minute basis. When the call came with the "guarantee to safely return our daughter to us within 72 hours" for a fee of $6,000, we jumped with great hope that our crisis would soon be over. It was not. She would remain in the life for the next two years. Through our journey and in the years that followed, we discovered, remarkably, that direct crisis support for parents with missing and trafficked children is non-existent. How can this be? Most parents will learn about human trafficking only after their child has fallen victim and they are in panic mode, desperately trying to make decisions that could significantly influence the outcome of their child's future. The Family Guides Program was designed around the urgent needs we experienced as a family and the ultimate needs we discovered our daughter would need throughout her lifetime. Through our program, families will be matched with a trained and vetted volunteer who will serve as a point of contact, providing daily updates and vetted local to national resources. Through our church partners, families will receive optional meal preparation and delivery and prayer teams. The Family Guides Program is designed to be scalable and planted in every major city across the U.S.
